Designing Ethical Campaigns

Have you ever wondered how to strategically contribute to a cause you care about and how to convince others to care as well? In this 1-credit Student-Initiated Course, you will be able to apply your knowledge to designing a campaign that can make tangible differences while staying true to your core values. We will explore various scenarios and hold discussions on ethics to help you better understand the different components of running an ethical campaign. Our assignments and activities will allow for you to have hands-on engagement with different target audiences at UMD to create and test your own ethical campaign.

idea258c: DESIGNING

ethical campaigns?

This course will immerse you in the methods of designing an ethical campaign. During the semester, you'll do things like:

• Learn from advocates about facilitating difficult dialogue

• Use active learning methods such as simulations, scenarios, visualization, and class discussion to understand issues related to campaigns

• Hear firsthand experiences about running campaigns

 

Throughout the semester you'll apply what you're learning to design your own campaign. We'll explore the different functions and methods it takes to run a campaign with ethics in mind.

COURSE

Schedule

Weeks 1–4

identity & leadership

Develop leadership skills by exploring how unique aspects of your identity and working style can be leveraged as  strengths. Identify areas of passion to determine what your campaign project might be.

WEEKS 5–8

ethics & campaign issues

With your classmates, engage in discussions about what ethics are and why they're important. Analyze negative campaign tactics and communications methods to understand more of the complexity and nuance that impacts campaigns.

WEEKS 8–12

campaign development

Learn more about the dynamics of campaign development by working on your own, related to an issue you care about. You'll have time in class to work on your campaign, and benefit from constructive feedback from classmates and others.

WEEKS 12–16

final stretch

Test elements of your campaign, apply storytelling elements, and practice your pitch. Along the way, you'll encounter scenarios and simulations that will help you navigate potential pitfalls and perils of running your own campaign!

Caroline Marr is a rising junior Government and Politics & Economics double major with a minor in International Development and Conflict Management. At UMD, she is a proud brother of Alpha Phi Omega, a national co-ed service fraternity, and a proud brother of Phi Alpha Delta, a national co-ed prelaw fraternity.

Academic faculty advisor

Mira Azarm is an Innovation Instigator in the Academy for Innovation & Entrepreneurship. She graduated from UMD many years ago with a B.A. in Studio Art, and more recently, earned her M.A. in Social Design from MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art). She teaches various classes on innovation behaviors, skills, and mindsets, with an emphasis on the design thinking and lean startup processes, is devoted to sustainability practices, and works with faculty to help them innovate in their teaching methods and offerings to students. She loves working with Alexis and Andrew to integrate human-centered design practices into developings campaigns and active learning methods into the class design.

Pooja is a sophomore double majoring in Neurobiology & Physiology and Public Policy. She is very passionate about human rights advocacy and healthcare inequities. Pooja is a main organizer for Amnesty International MD and involved in organizations such as College Mentors for Success and the Brain Exercise Initiative. In her free time she likes to hike and dance. Fun fact: she has visted 10 countries outside of the U.S.

Cecilia is a sophomore majoring in Neurobiology and Physiology. She is passionate about politics and is involved in several public health-related organizations, including Combating Overdoses in Rural Areas and Universities Allied for Essential Medicines. In her spare time, she loves to take care of her many houseplants and spend time with her family and 3 cats.
